about the school

The Melbourne Painting Workshop was founded in 2026 by Shulamit Lambe. The school runs as part-time studio program in Melbourne that teaches the core skills of drawing and painting from a live model.

Our program is unique in Melbourne as we work only in natural light and teach students how to build a drawing or painting over several hours. The program includes long-pose life drawing with guidance throughout, master copy classes, and annual intensive workshops.

Alongside studio practice, we look closely at major artists from the past to understand how their work is built and constructed with pictorial ideas. We see this as essential part of building a visual sensitivity.

Shulamit has trained at internationally acclaimed schools of traditional drawing and painting. These schools share a focus on working from life, but use different methods. This experience informs the range of approaches she teaches.

We don’t teach formulas. We teach tools, so artists can make clear, deliberate choices. While our training is grounded in traditional technique, the skills apply across many art forms.

We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and custodians of the unceded lands and waterways on which we live, learn, and work. In Naarm (Melbourne), we specifically recognize the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to Elders past, present, and future, and acknowledge the pivotal importance of their continuing connection to land, water, and culture.
